Corriglea and its own private stony beach
Over the bridge, or across by ferry
Valentia sits just off the tip of the Iveragh Peninsula, one of Ireland's most westerly points. You can drive straight on over the bridge at Portmagee, or take the short car ferry from Reenard Point into Knightstown during the summer season. Either way, the crossing feels like leaving the mainland behind.
Skellig Michael
A boat trip from Portmagee takes you out to the Skelligs. Skellig Michael has a monastery of stone beehive huts perched on the rock for over a thousand years, and it became famous all over again as a filming location for Star Wars. On a clear day you can see both rocks from the island.
Golf
Two of Ireland's finest golf courses are only 20 minutes away in Waterville, the town Charlie Chaplin made famous. Waterville Golf Links will blow you away in every sense, and Hogs Head Golf Club has breathtaking vistas, with majestic cliff holes overlooking Ballinskelligs Bay.
Restaurants
Beside the ferry port near Cahersiveen, O'Neill's at The Point is one of the best seafood restaurants anywhere in Ireland.
Over on the mainland by St Finian's Bay, Driftwood is a fabulous restaurant with views of the Skelligs. It uses local produce, and the menu changes regularly.
Just across the bridge in Portmagee, The Moorings is a cosy restaurant and pub right on the harbour, specialising in local seafood.
Valentia Slate
The Valentia Slate Quarry has been worked for two centuries, and its slate is known around the world, found in buildings from the Houses of Parliament in London to the Paris Opera House. The cave at the quarry, with its statue of the Virgin Mary, is a quiet place to stop.
The Royal
Dinner and a pint at the Royal Valentia Hotel, the heart of the village by the ferry slip.
Skellig Boat Trips
Numerous daily boat trips run to the world-famous UNESCO site. See the Skellig landing tour.
Fishing
Sea angling trips from the harbours and plenty of shore fishing for anyone who brings a rod.
Walks
Geokaun Mountain and Bray Head both look back over the island, the Skelligs and the open ocean.
The Tetrapod Trackway
On the north shore, the Tetrapod Trackway preserves footprints left in the mud around 385 million years ago, among the earliest traces anywhere of a four-legged creature walking on land.
St Finian's Bay
Just a 20-minute drive over the mountain is a magical bay, famous for surfing. There is often a sauna nearby, so you can warm up after an Atlantic dip.
Boats on still water, seen from the house's own stony beach
From the island to Adare Manor
Through some spectacular scenery along the Iveragh Peninsula, then inland through Killorglin and past Kerry Airport on to Adare.
Helicopter access to Adare for guests who want to skip the road on match days.
